Day 4

Split Jewish heritage tour

After breakfast, meet your private local guide, a member of Split's Jewish community and the city's only Jewish tour guide, for an in-depth walking tour focused on the Jewish heritage of Split. Split is one of the Adriatic's most remarkable port cities and Croatia's second-largest urban center. With a history spanning more than 1,700 years, the city is home to outstanding monuments, museums, and galleries. At its core stands Diocletian's Palace, one of the best-preserved Roman imperial residences in the world. During this tour, you will explore the city's ancient roots and discover how its Jewish residents contributed to Split's cultural and historical development. The Jewish presence in Split dates back to Roman times. The city's synagogue, established in the 16th century, is among the oldest continuously functioning synagogues in Europe, in use for over five centuries. The Jewish cemetery on Marjan Hill, founded in 1573, overlooks the city and offers remarkable insight into the community's past. Although today's congregation numbers around one hundred members, the Jewish influence on Split's history has been significant. The tour begins inside Diocletian's Palace, revealing lesser-known Jewish elements within what was originally a pagan, and later Christian, complex. From there, we will walk through the historic ghetto via the Jewish Passage and visit the synagogue, where you will have the opportunity to meet members of the Jewish community and learn about your guide's own family history. The experience concludes with a gentle walk up Marjan Hill to the Jewish cemetery, where you will see distinctive tombstones, including rare examples engraved with double Hebrew inscriptions, marking the resting places of some of Split's most notable Jewish residents. After the tour, enjoy the rest of your day at your own pace, reflecting on the rich heritage you have discovered.

The UNESCO legacy continues as you journey eastward to the Stari Grad Plain, an 80 - hectare agricultural expanse founded by the Ancient Greeks in 384 BC. Enjoy traditional lunch in an abandoned village of Malo Grablje - once a bustling agricultural settlement, it was abandoned in the early 20th century when residents moved closer to the coast for better opportunities. Today, its stone houses and narrow streets stand frozen in time, offering a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into Hvar's rural past.
